Monthly Care Tasks
A structured monthly schedule keeps your Yorkie healthy and catches problems early.
Weekly:
- Brush teeth (ideally daily, minimum 3x/week)
- Check ears for redness, odor, or discharge
- Inspect skin under the coat for irritation or parasites
- Trim nails if you hear clicking on hard floors
Monthly:
- Full body check (feel for lumps, check paw pads, examine eyes)
- Administer flea/tick prevention
- Administer heartworm prevention
- Weigh your Yorkie (even 4-8 oz changes matter at their size)
Quarterly:
- Check dental condition and schedule cleaning if needed
- Assess coat condition and adjust grooming routine
- Review food portions against weight trends
Annually:
- Complete veterinary wellness exam
- Blood work panel (CBC, chemistry, thyroid after age 5)
- Bile acid test (especially years 1-3)
- Dental cleaning under anesthesia
- Update vaccinations as needed
- Discuss any behavioral changes with your vet
Emergency Kit for Yorkies
Keep these items accessible at all times:
Must-Haves:
- Nutri-Cal or honey (for hypoglycemia)
- Rectal thermometer (normal Yorkie temp: 101-102.5°F)
- Styptic powder (for nail bleeds — they happen)
- Hydrogen peroxide 3% (to induce vomiting ONLY if vet instructs)
- Saline eye wash
- Small breed muzzle (even sweet dogs bite when in pain)
- Vet's number and nearest emergency vet address saved in your phone
