Understanding the Yorkie Coat
Hair, Not Fur
Yorkies don't have fur — they have hair. This single fact changes everything about their grooming needs.
What This Means:
- They don't shed in the traditional sense (hair falls out like human hair, not in seasonal blowouts)
- Their hair grows continuously — it doesn't stop at a set length like fur does
- They need regular haircuts — without trimming, a Yorkie's coat can grow to floor length
- Matting is a constant threat — fine, silky hair tangles easily
- They can get cold — no undercoat means less natural insulation
Coat Color Changes:
Yorkie puppies are born black and tan. Over their first 1-3 years, the black transitions to blue (steel gray) or remains dark. The tan deepens to gold. This color change is normal and gradual — don't worry if your puppy looks different at 6 months than they did at 8 weeks.
Coat Types You'll See:
- Silky (breed standard): Fine, straight, and glossy. Requires the most maintenance.
- Cotton/woolly: Softer, fluffier texture. Easier to maintain in a short cut but mats more easily.
- Wavy: Some wave or curl. Uncommon but beautiful. Treat like cotton coat for maintenance.
Essential Grooming Tools
Invest in quality tools. Cheap brushes pull and hurt, making grooming sessions miserable for both of you.
The Non-Negotiable Kit:
- Pin brush (with rounded tips) — for daily brushing
- Fine-tooth metal comb — for detecting and working through tangles
- Slicker brush (small, soft) — for finishing and fluffing
- Detangling spray — never brush a dry Yorkie coat
- Grooming scissors (rounded tips) — for face and paw trimming
- Nail clippers or grinder — small breed size
- Ear cleaning solution — vet-recommended brand
- Small hair bands (no metal) — for topknots
Nice to Have:
- Grooming table with arm (makes everything easier)
- Forced-air dryer (NOT a human hair dryer on high heat)
- Thinning shears for blending
- Coat oil (jojoba or coconut) for silky coats
